Welcome to Nine to Thrive: the lead generation uncovered with myself, Nicky Williams, business mentor, and Laura Barnett tech geek and marketing extraordinaire from The Thrive Business Academy. We are covering the seven biggest lies that you’ve been told about business that simply isn’t true. Um, so we’re really super duper passionate about telling you the truth and the things that leaders really don’t want you to know about, which is gonna help you generate leads, support your business, growth and income. So we’ve covered why you don’t need an ideal client. This is starting to be a bit of a game. There’s no win winning formula. Um, you have got your own winning formula. Um, why you don’t need flashy tech and, uh, being visible everywhere. Why you shouldn’t be visible everywhere. And we talked pricing in the last episode. And today we’re gonna talk about why you don’t make money whilst you sleep and it’s totally passive income. And I’m bringing this subject up because I’ve invested myself in a passive income, uh, courses before. And it’s simply not true. You don’t make a course and wake up to sales in the morning.

[00:01:22] Do you agree, Laura? 

[00:01:24] Laura Burnett: I would agree because it’s honestly, it happens so much. It’s actually disheartening to see how many people are investing in these courses to, um, you know, create courses, thinking that in a month’s time or week’s time, they’re gonna have thousands every morning when they wake up in the morning.

[00:01:45] Cause that’s how we’ve been advertised, it is advertised as that. And it gives you that. Um, I can’t think good word, false hope 

[00:01:55] Nicky Williams: Let’s let’s just go right in there and like let’s nail them to the cross. So it is like make money while you sleep. Um, wake up to sales, uh, receiving sales whilst you sleep, you know, all of those things, it just doesn’t happen.

[00:02:10] It requires much more. It requires an audience. Systems processes to, to, to make those sales happen. Um, even like down to customer relations, you know, some there’s people that can, that have to sort all of this out. None of this is passive. Okay. That means we’re doing something, passive is when you do nothing.

[00:02:32] All of this is not passive income. Okay. You need to make the product. You need to build the audience. You need to have presence on your social media. And I believe passive, purely passive income without any work whatsoever on a regular basis, meaning advertising, et cetera, is a fabrication.

[00:02:52] Laura Burnett: It is cause passive basically means not having to do anything. Don’t it? It means it’s generating income without you having to do anything. But if you’ve created – so you can make money while you sleep, you can, you can get money coming in and you wake up in the morning and money does get made. But you can’t do it passive because you have, you have to market it and marketing, is it 80% marketing, 20% actual doing that’s the rule isn’t it?

[00:03:17] Nicky Williams: Yeah. 

[00:03:18] Laura Burnett: And it’s true. It is literally 80% marketing your business. So you still have to spend 80% of your time marketing, that course that program or whatever it is that you’ve made. You’ve got to sit there and do that marketing. Obviously you could hire someone to do it, but either way it’s not passive income, is it because there’s work going into it still?

[00:03:40] So once you’ve done the hard work of creating it don’t expect that then you can just say, yep I’ve put my course live. I’ve just sent a social media post out. I’ve spent a week, you know, posting about it. I’ve got a couple of sales in. I’m just gonna make sales now in my sleep. You wont you, unless you actually do the full thing that you’ve got to build your audience, you’ve got to make yourself, your brand awareness increasing. Make yourself seen as the expert. And you’ve actually just got to do the marketing. You can’t just sit there and let it go, or you will not get any sales. And, um, I know full, well, cause I’ve got a course that I have and it doesn’t make any sales unless I advertise it. If I advertise it, it’ll make some sales, but if I just leave it there on my website, Very rare. I get a sale from it because I might get the odd one – 

[00:04:28] Nicky Williams: Nobody knows about it. Nobody knows about it. You’ve got like… we’re thinking emails, social media, stories, highlights, reels, websites, um, blog posts, Pinterest, you know, SEO, all of these things bring that passive income, but the passive is the key. It, the income coming in happens when you’ve set all of the cogs in motion, but all of those cogs have to keep turning. So you have to keep marketing, you have to keep on, um, making sure that that course is up to date, that that course is working effectively, that your customer services is working effectively, that your financial side, where you, you are using Stripe or whatever system you are using. Or all the tech is working. Okay. So, or whether you are running a Facebook group to encourage people with a welcome post to get, sell those things. That means it’s not passive income. The sale might be done without, you know, without you being there, but it doesn’t mean it’s passive. So I just do not believe that it is even a thing.

[00:05:38] Laura Burnett: I don’t think it exists, does it? 

[00:05:39] Nicky Williams: It can’t be, it can’t be. How can, how can you get money doing nothing in your business? 

[00:05:46] Laura Burnett: Because it’s even if you add Facebook ads, it’s still not passive. Cause you’re still having to have someone manage from Facebook ads.

[00:05:52] Nicky Williams: Yeah. 

[00:05:52] Laura Burnett: And put the Facebook ads out and manage them. It’s never ever passive is it? 

[00:05:56] Nicky Williams: Then it’s when you’ve got a team and it’s a totally different thing. So you might be saying it’s passive income, but it’s because you’ve got a team managing the entire, um, setup, isn’t it? So even if it’s like, we get reoccurring revenue from The Thrive Business Academy. But it’s not passive because we put effort and time and money into that membership, um, to make sure they’re nurtured that they’re supported, the live events that we put on every week. You know, so even if it’s a rolling mastermind, I turn up every single week and I, you know, interact with them Monday to Friday. It’s not passive. 

[00:06:32] So you can make sales, automated. So automated is a very, very different thing to passive. And I think that’s what we’re talking about here. 

[00:06:41] Laura Burnett: Yeah, because you could always create an automation sequence that when someone signs up for a certain lead magnet, they will then get upsell to your course. But again, that’s still not passive, because you’ve still gotta get people into the email sequence by advertising your lead magnet.

[00:06:57] So you still, again, not passive. And really the reason for it’s telling you this is cause we don’t want you ever buying into a course, program or anything, that is promising you passive income and you see you are actually going into it thinking. This is it. I’m gonna do this course. I’m gonna follow the steps, step by step. And I’m just gonna be getting money over night, all the time without having to do anything. It’s just gonna roll in. It’s not. You actually have to do any, you actually have to do things you actually have to put for working still it’s it’s not passive. It’s not a hundred percent passive and we don’t want you guys thinking it is, because then it’s just disheartening that you’ve invested into this course. And these courses are, you know, they, they had some great courses out there telling you about creating courses. But it’s that passive bit that we need to ignore and go into it knowing that it’s not passive. And then we can actually get the most out of it.

[00:07:52] Nicky Williams: I think, um, I think really what it is is leaders trying to say to you, it’s easy to make money. It’s easy to run a business. And all of these words are there to draw you into an, uh, to, for you to visualize that you can do this with ease. They’re obviously doing that now. I understand that sales technique, however, it’s simply not true.

[00:08:20] Um, we live and breathe our businesses. We’ve got our own separate businesses and we’ve got our joint, The Thrive Business Academy and obviously we’ve got this, uh, podcast and we know each other very, very well. And we work very, very, not hard, I would say, but we are very focused individuals and we know exactly what we need to do to get that end product.

[00:08:43] And we are there and we are doing it and we’re doing it consistently. We didn’t start the podcast thinking, oh, well, we’ll do five episodes and then we’ll be raking it in. We absolutely know, and, and through Laura’s expertise, we know that you have to do X amount of podcasts to even get a place on the podcast map.

[00:09:04] So none of it is passive. So just be aware that nothing, money, when you say money comes with ease, it’s easier if you love what you do and you are passionate about what you do, that makes it easier. Okay. You still have to do your marketing. You still have to have your strategy. You still have to have your focus every day.

[00:09:25] You still have to put your energy into it every day. And consistency will create momentum.

[00:09:32] Laura Burnett: A hundred percent. I think that’s all we need to say about this. Isn’t it? 

[00:09:36] Nicky Williams: Yeah. 

[00:09:36] Laura Burnett: It is what it is. So that is. High number five. Is it number five, Nicky, that we’re on cause I am failing at the game.

[00:09:48] Laura Burnett: I’ve lost a podcast day somewhere, but yes, that was about, “it’s easy to make money while you sleep” and uncovering that lie of actually, it’s not. You still actually have to have to do the things. Nothing is ever a hundred percent passive, so never, ever go into anything, thinking it is. Business is hard, but business is very rewarding, especially if you do what you love, which Nicky would always promote you to do.
